Choosing The Right Program
At Woodland Forest Center, program placement is based on developmental readiness rather than age alone, while remaining aligned with Michigan expectations for school readiness. In Michigan, children are eligible for kindergarten if they turn five by September 1; however, families may choose to delay kindergarten when a child would benefit from additional time to mature socially, emotionally, and physically.
Sprouts (Preschool) is a play-based program rooted in wonder, movement, and hands-on exploration. It may be an appropriate choice for children who are five years old but not ready for the structure or academic expectations of kindergarten, or for families who wish to gently prolong early childhood and avoid unnecessary academic pressure. Children in Forest Sprouts must not turn six before February 2027. Learning focuses on social development, imagination, and foundational readiness skills through play rather than formal academics.
Seedlings (K–2) supports children as they begin developing early academic skills while still learning best through hands-on experiences. Reading, math, and writing are introduced gently through storytelling, nature study, drawing, labeling, and shared journaling, with light and supported writing expectations.

Foresters (2–4) is designed for students ready for deeper inquiry and greater independence. Children engage in extended nature exploration and observation, using nature journaling to record findings, reflect on experiences, and develop scientific and narrative thinking.
Our goal is to meet each child where they are—supporting steady growth, confidence, and a lasting love of learning rooted in curiosity and connection to the natural world.

We value parents’ insight into their child’s readiness and believe thoughtful program placement is essential for both individual success and a balanced learning environment. By partnering together, we aim to place each child in the program where they will feel confident, supported, and able to thrive.
